Dovetail Joint
The dovetail joint locks a corner together with angled, interlocking "pins" and "tails" that mechanically resist being pulled apart in one direction — no clamps or fasteners needed while glue cures, and a well-cut dovetail holds together surprisingly well even dry. It's become the signature joint of fine furniture and drawer boxes for two reasons that happen to line up: it's genuinely strong, and it looks like you know what you're doing.
Pins and Tails
A dovetail joint has two interlocking parts cut into the ends of two boards meeting at a corner:
- Tails are the wider, angled projections (resembling a bird's tail, hence the name).
- Pins are the narrower sockets cut to receive the tails.
The angled sides of the pins and tails create a mechanical wedge that resists the joint being pulled straight apart, which is why dovetails are traditionally used on drawer fronts and backs — the pulling force of opening the drawer works against, rather than with, the joint's weakest direction.
Common Variations
- Through dovetails — the joint is visible from both faces of the corner, common on the sides of boxes and chests.
- Half-blind dovetails — the joint is only visible from one face, commonly used on drawer fronts so the joinery doesn't show from the front of the piece.
- Sliding dovetails — a single long dovetail-shaped groove and matching tongue, used to join shelves to case sides or attach table aprons, rather than a series of pins and tails at a corner.
Layout and Spacing
Pin and tail spacing is typically laid out with a dovetail marker or template at a fixed angle (commonly around 1:6 to 1:8 for softwoods, slightly steeper for hardwoods), and the spacing between pins needs to account for the saw's kerf so the fit isn't too tight or too loose once cut.
Cutting Method
Dovetails can be cut entirely by hand with a dovetail saw and chisels, or roughed out with a router and dovetail jig for speed and repeatability, then fine-tuned by hand. Either way, cutting slightly to the waste side of the layout line and paring back to it with a sharp chisel is the standard way to sneak up on a tight, gap-free fit.
