Sanding Discs

Sanding discs are the round abrasive sheets that attach to a random orbital sander's pad, typically via hook-and-loop backing for quick changes. They're the part of the sanding system that actually removes material — the sander just provides motion — and the difference between a cheap, dull disc and a quality one shows up directly in how much time you spend sanding and how the final surface looks.

Grit progression

Working through a proper grit sequence (roughly 80 → 120 → 150 → 220 for most furniture work) rather than skipping steps is what actually produces a clean, even surface — each grit's job is to remove the previous grit's scratch pattern, not to somehow jump straight to a fine finish. Skipping from coarse to fine leaves the coarser scratches underneath, invisible until finish is applied and reveals them.

Abrasive material

  • Aluminum oxide — the standard, general-purpose abrasive for wood; durable and reasonably priced, the default choice for most sanding.
  • Ceramic — more aggressive and longer-lasting, generally reserved for heavier stock removal or production use where discs need to last through more material than aluminum oxide comfortably manages.
  • Zirconia — another heavier-duty option, common in belt sanding abrasives more than random orbital discs specifically.

For most furniture and shop work, aluminum oxide is the practical default; the premium abrasives earn their cost in high-volume or heavy-removal situations more than everyday finish sanding.

Hole patterns and dust collection

Matching a disc's hole pattern to your sander's dust collection ports matters more than it seems — a mismatched pattern blocks airflow and leaves dust on the surface (and in the air) that a matched pattern would pull away through the pad. Most major disc brands now use universal or near-universal multi-hole patterns specifically to solve this, but it's worth checking against your specific sander rather than assuming.

Loading and when to replace

A disc that's "loaded" — clogged with sanding residue, especially on softer or resinous woods — stops cutting efficiently well before it looks obviously worn. Discs are a genuine consumable, not a buy-once item; budgeting for replacing them regularly (rather than pushing a loaded disc past its useful life) saves more time than the cost of the discs themselves.
